the option (recompile) hint for the index seek operator will cause the index seek operator to be recompiled whenever the partitioning for the index changes. the option (recompile) hint for the index scan operator (not shown in the illustration) causes the index scan operator to be recompiled whenever the partitioning for the table changes.
the final stage of the plan is the index scan operator, which is always executing as a single sequential scan. the parallel plan will execute the index scan in parallel mode with an appropriate degree of parallelism. consequently, any additional indexes on the table are out of order because the plan is effectively mixed parallel plan.
mixed parallelism is not always a bad thing, but it can result in poor query performance when the query statement is optimized for non-mixed parallelism. for example, with mixed parallelism a query optimizer might choose to apply the option (recompile) hint to the index scan operator when the index seek operator contains sequential scan logic and the plan contains a reordering operator. this hint is applied as a post-hint and must be applied at the rhs of the reorder operator. the cost of the operator on the rhs of the reorder operator is often not calculated until after the hint has been applied. however, the index seek operator contains parallel scan logic, so the hint is applied before the cost of the operator can be determined. consequently, this is the first operator that the optimizer analyzes.
